Someone I was talking to the other day brought up this idea....what is the real goal of education?
The system has really started to fail students (who should be the focus of education). Education is really about teaching students, teaching kids, who are people. Its about the communication of new information to an audience. The teacher/student dynamic and relationship is the key to this spread and retriving of information.
In this I haven't mentioned standardization or test scores. The system focuses on scores and grades instead of the people involved. Students become reduced to their grade, rank, and score. Where is the humanity in that?
Standardization means the same information is passed from the teacher to each student. What about what the student needs or wants to know?

I believe that the real purpose of education is to show students how to conduct themselves in a society. We tend to break students down into catergories, good students and bad students. Why can't they just be students. I always told my students the first day of class. I dont care what you have done, in my class you get a new start. I am not going to listen to what other teachers say about you. I will make my own decision based on how you treat me. I will treat you the same way you treat me. I usually dont have any problems with students even the ones other teachers say are trouble.
Education is to produce productive citizens, ones who contribute to society. These citizens need to be able to read, write, calculate, and THINK. They need to be able to take care of themselves, and hopefully others. These words sound so impersonal, as if we are making little machines, but words don't take into consideration the humanity of teaching someone to blow their nose, or take care of a dispute w/o hurting themselves or others. There's humanity inside the words, we need the words to communicate w/ each other - but we need the humanity more.
