Often in history courses, there is an issue arising which is that we feel we must make up for the mistakes in the past. So we fill courses with First Nations or African studies in order to apologize for leaving these groups out of the history we use to teach.
BUT....in a society filled with immigration and migration there are diverse countries, regions, people, and cultures represented in both Canada and the US. We are multi-cultural nations now, so should we celebrate one group or all groups???? I would like to see a multi-cultural month that could be translated into the classroom into spending a day or a project that could be presented to the class about a different culture or country, in order to examine the diversity that is emerging in Canada and the US.
With knowledge comes understanding and a decrease of racism and stereotyping. We are scared and unsure of what we don't know or understand. Promote multi-culturalism in the classroom.

Because the US used slaves and segregation I think it may be appropriate to have a Black History month. The point is to create the conditions where African-Americans/Black Americans are Americans. From south of the US/Canada border I see Canadians as Canadians. It's possible Canadians/Canadiens is a larger problem than race.
Integrate it into Canadian History.
