Well, mid semester hit and I got so busy that I pushed aside writing in my blog, I have missed it though so I'll start being around again.

I am doing a term paper on climate change and I seem to be feeling excited about it already, so that might become a topic I deal with on here.

An interesting question arises tho....which is as teachers how do we approach controversial issues in the classroom? What approaches or techniques do we use?

Post your controverial topic on the board, they'll read it when they come in. As you greet your students at the door, those sitting will have time to "get fired up". It should be easy to get an open dialogue by the time you are ready to start class. After 5-10 minutes of dialogue, have them write their thoughts in their journals.
Through the next few sessions, begin presenting facts of the matter, educational videos, news reports, whatever. Time to write afterwards is key.
